6. Darkseid

No quick bits tonight. Although Venomous Villain is another great Doom production. Mostly an EP. Slightly different type of Doom production. Hoped the best track on the cd would be Doper Skiller, the one he does with Kool Keith, but instead I’m really feeling Bloody Chain, mostly because it’s a story tale from two different perspectives: the first from a dude who stole a chain and gave it to some chick he just got some ass from; and the second from a dude who has his chain stolen and spots a girl wearing it and shanks her ass. Nice.

Anyway, Mister 6 on our list is the Aunt Esther wannabe ruler of the universe. I would call him Clay, if Clay wasn’t so, you know. Forget about it. Introducing the master schemer of the 4th World. Trust me, Rwanda is like Florida compared to this dude’s homeworld. And I thought I used to live in a slum.

Recognize my homes. It’s none other than…

Darkseid

If I thought there was a dude who might like eating people’s babies it would be Darkseid. Not to say he’s done anything like that. I’m just saying, he looks like a baby eater.

Darkseid, who made his first appearance in 1970 in a Jimmy Olsen book, no doubt, is probably one of the baddest dudes in the DCU. Ruler of Apokolips, Darkseid’s mighty powers manifest themselves in his all encompassing Omega Effect, rays that shoot from his eyes and that have the power to disintegrate matter, perform teleportation, and even return to life those he has killed.

Darkseid gained this ability from Apokolips’s Infinity Pit, where he killed his own brother to acquire them. He and his brother, Drax, were like most brothers, always in competition with one another. Uxas, what Darkseid was known as back in the day, resented his brother, who was top dog on Apokolips. Drax sought peace with his warring planetary neighbor, New Genesis. Uxas merely wanted to conquer like their mother Hegga had raised them to. When Drax found out a way to tap into the Infinity Pit, Uxas killed him and took the power and the throne for himself. The pits would transform Uxas from his human form to the ugly ass Darkseid we all know and love.

But that wasn’t the end of Darkseid’s murderous path. He would later have his own mother murdered, taking over rulership of the kingdom completely, and having the wife he was forced to marry by his mother, and son, Orion. banished to unknown parts of Apokolips. He would later kidnap the ruler of New Genesis, the Highfather, Izaya, and have everyone believe him dead. This created the war he wanted that lasted many years.

The war ended when Darkseid and the Highfather exchanged sons as part of a peace treaty. Darkseid would give Highfather his son, Orion. And in return, he would get the son of Highfather, Scott Free, who would later be known as Mister Miracle. But the treaty was broken when Free rebelled against Darkseid and escaped Apokolips. And war began when Darkseid turned his attentions to Earth, which was a neutral zone, to gain possession of the Anti-Life Equation.

What is the Anti-Life Equation, no one knows, it is believed to be the most powerful thing in the cosmos, able to control all things. It was used by the Old Gods in their wars, and was split and scattered about the universe when they destroyed themselves. This event also split their world in two, creating the beautiful New Genesis, and the fire pit, slum hole Apokolips. The Anti-Life Equation was believed to have been placed in the minds of several Earthlings. And Darkseid stopped at nothing to find them. He was stopped from controlling Anti-Life through the help of Earth’s heroes, although the war resulted in the destruction of New Genesis.

Darkseid, like most villains has lived and died and lived again many times over since then. And I won’t even go into Anti-Life anymore, seeing that it gets more convoluted the more I regurgitate. Unfortunately, the New Gods saga was never finished by Jack Kirby, the guy who created the 4th World. And he never explained what the Anti-Life Equation was. We’re instead left with interpretations of the Equation and the ending he might have wanted.

And Darkseid. The problem with all powerful beings like Darkseid is that they can never win. No one reads super-hero comics to see the villain win. At least not completely. Darkseid wins, conquers Earth, makes slaves out of us. Super-hero team goes back in time to defeat him. Result, nullifying the villain victory. Evil people get to do evil things. Part of what makes them evil is the evil acts they do, and the fact that they can’t take them back. Where’s the suspense when we know before the story begins that the all powerful villain will lose in the end? All the death and destruction he caused will be wiped clean.

Unfortunately, evil, me wanna rule the world, despots can never be considered legitimate contenders to the throne of top villain around. They can never really win. They become reduced to stupid criminals who fail at committing stupid crimes. No one whose only goals are to conquer the universe can ever win. And that defeats the purpose.
