Scare Tactics
I hate to say it, but the RIAA legal scare tactics may just be working, at least in the short term. I lot of people are closing up shop, unclicking those shared folders, locking those files down, closing down websites. You know the RIAA’s a crazy bitch when they sue a 12-year-old.
What the hell kind of justice do you think they may inflict on a hardcore mp3 whore?
I don’t see too many “Fuck THE RIAA” these days. It’s a little bit like when the FBI cracked down on Drink-Or-Die a year or two ago. A lot of irc channels went “invite-only” or closed down altogether. Many websites went down, a majority didn’t return. It became a little harder to get those cheap, grubby-ass hands on underground material.
The positive: edonkey, bittorrent, freenet, etc. Meaning it forced people to become innovative, creating new channels, new pathways, new protocols, to fuck up the process. In the long run, today’s practices will only be a blip on the screen. Warez and ripping groups will simply fill the void of the big ones taken down. They will utilize new tricks to make themselves harder to be traced. New programs will become public for the masses. New tools will make it harder to trace files to specific individuals. Shit will get easier for those willing to stay in the game.
